Softball Falls to No. 10 Auburn in Doubleheader
HATTIESBURG, Miss – The Southern Miss softball team dropped two in a doubleheader to No. 10 Auburn on Monday afternoon. The Golden Eagles move to 10-16 on the season.
Today marked the first matchup between the two teams since 2013, and the first time they have met in Hattiesburg in series history.
Southern Miss put up a combined twelve hits on the day with eight in game one and five in game two. Destini Brown went 2-for-4 on the day and scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to extend the game. Samantha Papp tallied hits in both games extending her hitting streak to five-games.
No. 11 Auburn 9, Southern Miss 2
Auburn took an early lead after a two-out, three-run homer over the right field wall to put the Tigers up 3-0. The team added another run to the board in the top of the third but the Golden Eagles responded with a run in the bottom after an RBI single by Brown to score Samantha Reynolds.
The Tigers extended their lead in the top of the fifth with four runs on four hits, and then added an insurance run in the top of the sixth, 9-1.
Southern Miss scored in the bottom of the sixth to avoid the run rule but ultimately fell to the Tigers.
Jillian Johnson got her fourth start on the season and pitched four and 2/3 innings giving up four earned runs before freshman lefty, Reagan Watkins came in relief. The Daphne native pitched two 1/3 innings with only one earned run and a strikeout. Johnson was charged with the loss.
No. 11 Auburn 5, Southern Miss 0
The two teams exchanged scoreless innings until an Auburn RBI single put them on top 1-0 in the top of the third. Another two scoreless innings followed before the Tigers struck again, this time with two-out two run homer over the center wall added to their lead and a solo homerun in the seventh secured the win.
Southern Miss put runners in scoring position but just could not capitalize in the nightcap.
Kim Crowson started in the circle and pitched for six complete innings giving up four earned runs before Samantha Robles came in relief in the top of the seventh and gave up one earned run. Crowson was charged with the loss and moves to 5-5 on the year.
The Golden Eagles host the Troy Trojans, Thursday, March 15 in a doubleheader with action beginning at 3 p.m. It will be Throwback Thursday full of music and games from the 80s.
