Southern Miss scratched the scoreboard first. In the top of the first, Chase Nelson was credited with a sac fly after she flew out to right field scoring Karley Nichols for the first run of the game, but after an defensive timeout a pop up ended the inning.

The Hilltoppers held a 3-1 lead heading into the fifth. WKU put up five runs in the half inning behind a two-run homer by McGuffin that extended their lead, 11-1.

The Golden Eagles scored two runs in the bottom off a 2 RBI sac fly by Sarah Van Schaik but it wasn’t enough as a fly out to centerfield ended the scoring threat and the game, marking the first time Southern Miss has fallen in less than seven innings.
