Softball Falls in Final Games of Tiger Classic

BATON ROUGE, La. -- The Southern Miss Softball team fell to UT Arlington 6-4 and Syracuse 8-3 on the final day of the Tiger Classic.

Jillian Johnson got the starting nod against the Mavericks and pitched four complete innings before Robles (0-2) came in relief, only giving up one earned run. The matchup against Syracuse saw three pitchers in total with Jade Lewis getting the start.

Freshman Tata Davis is currently on a three game hitting streak after her single against UT Arlington and first inning double against Syracuse. Sophomore Beth Taylor got her first hit on the season in the second game.

UT Arlington 6, Southern Miss 4

The Golden Eagles came out swinging putting up four runs on three hits in the top of the first inning.

Samantha Reynolds had a leadoff single to get the ball rolling. Davis laid a perfect bunt down to advance Reynolds to second and Lewis reached on a fielder's choice to give the Black and Gold two runners. With two outs and two runners on, Schaik stepped up and knocked an RBI single to plate Reynolds; both Ciarra Cherry and Johnson drew walks to load the bases and plate a run.

After a 24-minute rain delay, Rebekah DiLavore nailed a two RBI single to bring home two more runs. A fly out ended the scoring string.

The teams exchanged scoreless innings until the Mavericks' Garcia launched a two-run homer to cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth. Right before the rain delay that suspended the game, UTA had the bases loaded with one out.

The game picked back up Sunday morning and it was a two RBI single in the sixth that sealed the win for the Mavericks.

Johnson pitched four complete innings before Robles came in relief and finished the game giving up just one earned run.

Syracuse 8, Southern Miss 3

The Orange jumped out a 4-0 lead after three complete innings but the Golden Eagles came alive in the sixth. The Black and Gold brought home three runners stringing together two doubles by Samantha Papp and Sarah Van Schaik and Beth Taylor knocked a single and advanced to second on the throw before a fly ball ended the scoring streak.

In the bottom of the sixth, Syracuse capitalized on two Golden Eagle errors to plate four runs to seal the win, 8-3.

The game saw three pitchers, Lewis, who ultimately was given the loss, Johnson who was in for 2/3 of an inning and Kim Crowson who finished the game.

Southern Miss opens the home season on Tuesday, February 13th, taking on Alcorn State in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
