Getting to Know the 2017-18 Lady Eagles: Jayla King

Aug. 10, 2017

HATTIESBURG, Miss – Jayla King was part of the consistent foundation for the Lady Eagles last season. The Pensacola, Fla. native started every game, averaging 28.3 minutes a game. King also led the team in every rebounding statistic and notched a team-leading five double-doubles.

King averaged seven boards while averaging 10.3 points a game. Her 18 points against Xavier in the Puerto Rico Classic helped knock off the Musketeers. She also pulled down a career-high 18 rebounds at UTSA, helping the Lady Eagles take down the Roadrunners 69-68.

The senior will be a key piece if the Lady Eagles are to build up from last season.

“It’s my goal to get more rebounds and score more points this year, have an attack mentality,” King said. “I’m also trying to be more positive this season and to lift up my teammates whenever they’re struggling and feel like they can’t do it anymore.”

With four-year players Brittanny Dinkins and Lashyra Cotton gone, King will be looked at for leadership due to her experience.

“Coach tells me in person and in texts every single day that I need to be the voice and the vocal leader,” King said. “Sometimes it seems like there is a lot of pressure, but I can handle it.”
