Three Southern Miss Student-Athletes Earn SAAC Honors
Estrada, Papp and Reyes claim honors
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss softball players Selena Estrada and Samantha Papp along with Southern Miss men's tennis player Jorman Reyes have been voted as the SAAC Student-Athletes of the Week.
Estrada notched three runs on two hits and three RBI over the weekend at the 31st Louisiana Classic Tournament in Lafayette. Estrada clinched the win and the sweep over No. 11 Louisiana Lafayette with a two-run walk off homerun in the second game of the doubleheader. Estrada also started four out of the six games and appeared in five.
Along with her teammates impressive numbers, Papp earned three runs on three hits and five RBIs during the week. Papp's weekend was highlighted by a solo homerun in the first game against No. 11 Louisiana Lafayette to give Southern Miss a 4-1 lead. In game two of the doubleheader against ULL, Papp hit a three-run homerun to tie the game up in the bottom of the sixth. Papp put Southern Miss back in the game and the eventual 4-3 win. Her homerun against ULL was her second career homerun.
Reyes picked up the final SAAC nomination after his winning performance against New Orleans. Reyes continues to have the hot hand at No. 3 spot for the Golden Eagles and improved to 5-0 after his win against Staksrud this weekend. This was Reyes first match at No. 3. His previous four wins came at the No. 4 spot. In his five matches, Reyes has only dropped one set. Reyes has dominated past opponents with two wins finishing 6-0, 6-0.
Along with his fifth win of the season, Reyes and doubles partner Daniel Merker helped earn the doubles point with a 7-5 win. Reyes and Merker have three doubles win all at the No. 1 spot in doubles.
