Golden Eagles Finish Third at Sam Hall Intercollegiate
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss Men’s Golf team shot a 295 in the final round of the Sam Hall Intercollegiate to collect a tournament total 859, the team’s lowest 54-hole total in 10 tournaments, and a third place finish.
“Today was a tough day on the course, but we fought hard.” Coach Jerry Weeks said. “We just didn’t get it done to get the results that we wanted. We’re looking forward to next week so we can get this taste out of our mouth.”
Senior Matt Codd was the Golden Eagles highest finisher, tied for 8th overall after shooting a 72-67-75 over the two days of competition. Matt Lorenz, a sophomore from Gulf Shores, Ala., carded a 71 on the last day and climbed six spots to finishing tied for 13th with a 215.
Junior Derick Kelting followed closely behind with a 216 total after a 76 third round to end tied for 17th. Sophomore Walker Kesterson trailed his teammates by one stroke as he closed with a 217 following a 76 final round for 22nd place. Nathan Corchis capped the starting five in 50th following a final round of 73 and a 226 total.
Junior Philip Heine had Southern Miss’ best finish for an individual, and second best individual in the tournament, at 28th. His 16 holes of par or better, including an Eagle, gave him a career-low 69 for the round and a 219 for the whole tournament.
Freshman Brian Richards carded a 211 with scores of 72-74-75, ending tied for 37th. Hunter Atkins gathered 12 holes of par or better in the third round to shoot a 73 and finish tied for 45th. Willie Hammond fired a 79 in his last round to finish tied for 57th with a 299 overall. Vasili Kartos rounded out the Golden Eagle participants, tied for 61st, with a 230 total and a 78 third round, including birdies on two of the final three holes.
Southern Miss heads to Choudrant, La. Sept. 18-19 for the LA Tech hosted Jim Rivers Intercollegiate.
