NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Southern Miss redshirt-senior Julian Allen has earned recognition on the John Mackey Award watchlist, presented annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end.
Allen made a fantastic first impression with the Golden Eagles, hauling in an 18-yard touchdown catch that pulled Southern Miss within 35-31 of Kentucky, en route to its dramatic season-opening win. He also had a career-long 82-yard catch versus Rice on Oct. 1, helping his team to a school record 702-yard game. The Marshall game also saw him snag a 52-yard reception.
Allen, a native of Sewell, N.J. and product of Lackawanna College, finished with 19 catches for 281 yards. He was ranked as high as the No. 4 junior college tight end. Allen is one of four C-USA student-athletes to be represented on the list.
Pro Football Hall of Fame member John Mackey is considered to be the best to have played the tight end position. A tight end by whom all others are measured, Mackey was a role model on and off the field as demonstrated by his Super Bowl championship, his commitment to community and his place in history as the first President of the NFLPA.
The 2017 campaign begins in The Rock on Sept. 2 against Kentucky. Season tickets, and recently-unveiled flex plans, can be purchased by visiting SouthernMissTickets.com, calling 1-800-844-TICK, or stopping by the Pat Ferlise Center during normal business hours.
