HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Opening day is upon Southern Miss baseball and the program looks to continue with the success it enjoyed a season ago.
The Golden Eagles, which begin the campaign with a three-game series over the weekend against Northeastern, looks to build on their 41-20 finish a year ago as well as a Conference USA tournament title and the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearance in five seasons.
The two teams play single contests Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with game times set for 4 p.m., 1 p.m., and 1 p.m., respectively. Click here for this weekend’s promotion schedule.
The Huskies, under third-year coach Mike Glavine, look to improve on a 31-27 finish from a season ago that included a fifth-place showing in the Colonial Athletic Association.
Northeastern will face a Golden Eagle squad that returns as the top offensive squad in C-USA from a season ago, leading the league in average (.305), runs (419), hits (622), home runs (67) and runs batted in (392).
Back from that squad is senior preseason all-league selection Dylan Burdeaux, who makes the transition from right field to first base. The West Monroe, La., native hit .335 a season ago with 11 homers and 41 RBI. Joining his back is junior third baseman Taylor Braley (Hattiesburg, Miss.), who returns after missing the second half of the season a year ago with a knee injury. Before he left, Braley batted .323 with 10 homers and 31 RBI in 27 games.
Returners back for the Golden Eagles also include junior Daniel Keating (Gulfport, Miss.) and sophomore Hunter Slater (Mobile, Ala.). Keating, the C-USA Tournament Most Valuable Player a season ago, hit .303 with five homers and 29 RBI, while Slater, a member of the league’s All-Freshman team, batted .314 with four homers and 26 RBI. Senior Tracy Hadley (Pascagoula, Miss.) returns as well after tallying a .256 mark with a homer and 14 RBI.
The Golden Eagles also welcome a talent stable of newcomers that includes 21 individuals.
The Northeastern series starts a string of seven of eight games at home for Southern Miss to open the season.
