BYDGOSZCZ, Poland – Southern Miss sophomore hammer thrower Nadia Maffo is set to compete in the European Athletics U23 Championships on Friday, July 14.
Lineups, updates and results will appear on the official web site, with the qualifying rounds beginning at 3:00 a.m. CT, Friday morning.
Maffo, representing Italy, had a breakthrough freshman season taking home Gold at the C-USA Outdoor Championships in the hammer throw and solidified a spot in the record books after a school record toss of 62.04m at the Southern Miss Open.
She was named Female Field Athlete of the Week after a school record toss of 60.09m at the LSU Alumni Gold before breaking her own record the following week.
The Udine, Italy native was named Freshman of the Meet for her performance at the Outdoor Championships qualifying her for the NCAA East Regional competition that was held in Lexington, Ky.
“I am beyond proud of Nadia’s accomplishments this year,” said assistant coach Jennifer Svoboda. “She has trained hard to prepare herself for the championships and she is in a really good place mentally as well as in her training. Elite competitions such as this one are great learning experiences for young athletes, she has the entire Southern Miss family rooting for her in Hattiesburg.”
Junior Thomas Peters competed at the IAAF (International Association of Athletic Federations) World U20 in Poland last year finishing in the top 35 among the competitors in the javelin, making this consecutive years that a thrower from Southern Miss has been invited to a world championship.
